A Shepherd After the Heart of Christ

With heavy hearts and deep gratitude, the Congregation of the Mission, Vice-Province of Kenya, joins the universal Church in mourning the loss of Pope Francis, the 266th Pope of the Catholic Church. His passing marks the end of an era, one in which he tirelessly exemplified the true spirit of the Gospel, leading with compassion, humility, and an unwavering commitment to those most in need.

Pope Francis dedicated his life to serving the poor and marginalized, reflecting the heart of Christ’s mission. His papacy was a powerful reminder that the call to serve the poor is not a peripheral task but at the core of our Christian identity. He called all of us to be closer to the suffering, to care for the needy, and to be true instruments of peace and reconciliation in a broken world. His life was a living testament to the values that we, as members of the Congregation of the Mission, strive to live every day – humility, simplicity, and dedication to evangelizing the poor.

Under his guidance, the Church took bold steps toward deepening our commitment to social justice, interfaith dialogue, and environmental stewardship. Pope Francis led the Church in embracing the marginalized, offering compassion to the suffering, and calling for peace amidst a world riddled with conflict. His courage to challenge the status quo in the pursuit of justice and dignity for all people will continue to inspire generations to come.

As we reflect on the life and legacy of Pope Francis, we are reminded of his call to “go to the peripheries” and to be the hands and feet of Christ in a world that desperately needs His love. His words and actions have illuminated the path for us to follow, and we, the Congregation of the Mission, pledge to continue walking in his footsteps, dedicating ourselves to the service of the poor and the work of evangelization.

We offer our prayers for the repose of his soul, entrusting him to the mercy and grace of God. May he find eternal peace in the loving embrace of our Father, and may his memory continue to inspire us all to live lives of deeper faith, love, and service.

Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace. Amen.

I join in mourning our Holy Father. May He Rest in Peace. He taught us humble service, holiness, and the need for global peace! He was a true shepherd of our time.

Very Rev. Fr. Edwin Mugwe
